Cliff Richard, Albert Hall, review

A perfectly preserved voice and undiminished energy makes for high-value entertainment. Rating: * * * *
By Neil McCormick

Seventy may be a bit late to embark on a reinvention, but with his landmark birthday falling on Thursday this week, Britain’s original rock idol is performing six shows at the Albert Hall backed by a 20-piece swing band from Nashville, the Orchestra de Ville.

In a silky white tailcoat ensemble, the Peter Pan of Pop swishes around the stage, face alight with that familiar grin, lending his perfectly toned vocals to a set of pre-rock-and-roll standards and showtunes. Introducing Accentuate the Positive, he declares, with mock incredulity, that “this song was written in 1944, when I was just a twinkle.”

To be fair, despite the exhortation of his original 1958 hit Move It, he has never been much of a mover or a groover. His familiar gestures are all on display, the bow-legged shuffle, the thumbs aloft twirl, the stiff-hipped wriggle. For key numbers, he stalks the stage like a reject from the Marcel Marceau school of choreography, physically enacting every lyric.

Who can forget his cat prowl and crystal-ball polishing from Devil Woman, which is duly re-enacted in a first half set of his own hits?

But it’s almost too easy to make fun of Cliff. There are reasons for his showbusiness longevity, and they were all on display tonight. I doubt there is another singing star of this vintage who is quite so well preserved. Cliff’s tone and fluency is so pure and perfect, it almost works against the sophisticated, swinging material. Even after all this time, his voice does not sound lived in, bouncing around the melody with the same zest and flow he brought to teenybop hits.

And Cliff is no jazz singer. Attempts to scat with the horns were misjudged, his technically perfect “shooby doo doo wops” entirely lacking in improvisational flair.

It was in the first set of his own hits, rearranged to incorporate woodwind solos and other orchestral variations, that we really saw Cliff in his element. These are songs perfectly matched with his voice and persona, the kind of pop music you can’t argue with, from the Sixties rush of The Day I Met Marie to the Seventies soft rock of Miss You Nights.

But he has been doing this material for decades, and both he and his fans are clearly enjoying his diversion to a pre-Cliff world. With his exuberant vocal flair, technical perfectionism, cheerful rapport with his audience, and armed with the always impressive power of a horn section at full tilt, this was an evening of high-value, top-drawer, old-fashioned entertainment.
